Thrifty Thursdays with Mel: Atlanta Fall Festivals

The Atlanta fall festival season is full of free and cheap activities and about to kick into high gear around here. If you know Atlanta, you know we’ll make a festival out of anything – especially food! This weekend, the Marietta Street Fest September 17-18 will have plenty of food and fun for the pint-sized set. There are also a couple of family-friendly events this week that working moms (and dads) can take advantage of like National Parent and Child Play Day at Legoland Discovery Center on Sept. 16 or the Thursday evening story time at Little Shop of Stories.

LEGOLAND® Discovery Center Atlanta has declared a “National Parent and Child Play Day” to celebrate the benefits of families taking time-out and engaging in creative play. Coinciding with National Working Parents Day on Friday, September 16, a series of family-focused games and activities including parent-and-child Build & Test races, model-building challenges and more will be offered. Surrounded by Native American baskets in the special exhibition, Coiling Culture: Basketry Art of Native North America, children will hear Lee DeCora Francis’ story of how Kunu learns the family tradition of basketmaking. After looking closely at the Penobscot “porcupine” basket in the gallery, children will weave a flat “basket bottom” just like Kunu. Recommended for children ages 3 to 5 years. Every Monday each month, young guests are invited to become tiny foodies, tiny artists, tiny makers, and tiny scientists during Tiny Club Mondays! Choose a club and enjoy a 30-minute class designed especially for kids ages 2 – 5 and their caregivers. Attend a club and get a stamp in your Tiny Club Passport! Each participate gets a free passport to keep track of all the clubs you’ve joined and participated in each week. Get 2 stamps and you get a grab bag prize. Get 4 stamps and you will receive a Museum coloring book & pencil. If you collect 8 stamps you will receive a two month membership extension! Space is limited. Sign-up sheets are available beginning when the Museum opens at 10 AM.
