DIY Tuesday: Homemade Sunscreen

0

Hello Everyone! Today is DIY Tuesday and the project this week is a natural homemade sunscreen!

With the arrival of summer quickly approaching, the issue of finding a safe sunscreen for the little ones is on a lot of our minds. Natural sunscreens are great for children’s sensitive skin, but they often come with a hefty price tag. If you are wanting a safe and natural sunscreen to use on your little ones, then this affordable and easy recipe is perfect for you! All of the ingredients can easily be found on amazon and the total cost per batch is less that $5! You can’t beat that for all natural! Plus with this sunscreen, you will be able to pronounce every ingredient!

Ingredients:
1/4 cup shea butter
1/4 cup coconut oil
2 tablespoons zinc oxidediy sunscreen

1. Melt the shea butter and coconut oil together with a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, just fill a pot with water and place a metal bowl on top.
2. Remove from heat and stir in zinc oxide (avoid breathing in; wear a mask). Pour into mason jar or other container.
3. Let cool completely before use. Store at room temperature or if storing long term, refrigerator is best.

This recipe has an SPF of about 20 which is plenty for most everyday activities. This means that about 95% of the UVB rays are blocked. This sunscreen lacks the chemicals that make traditional sunscreens waterproof so make sure to reapply after swimming or heavy sweating. You might also notice that the sunscreen does not rub in clear, this is completely normal so don’t worry, it is still effective. If you want to make this recipe even easier, you could simply add zinc oxide to your favorite natural lotion! You can also add one extra tablespoon of zinc oxide to increase the SPF if you wish.

Hope you enjoy!
